It was thought for ages that cotton was cotton and thread count was king when choosing quality sheets. That is no longer true. Consumer guidelines for buying bedding suggest that cotton from Egypt is superior to other cotton. Is this true and, if so, what is the big difference?

Egyptian cottons are used to create bedding of all types from sheets to pillowcases to comforters. The long staple or long fibre of Egyptian-grown cotton means that there is more continuous fibre to use when creating threads or yarns. This yarn is smaller in diameter yet stronger than other cottons. Smaller yarn means that more threads per square inch can be used to create stronger fabric which is light in weight yet breathes well.

What is the difference between a bedspread and a coverlet?

A bedspread completely covers the bed with the sides extending to the floor, with enough allowance at the top of the spread to completely cover the pillows. The coverlet is a smaller version of a bedspread with the sides of the coverlet extending halfway to the floor. Rather than covering the pillows, a coverlet usually has matching decorative shams. 

A coverlet or quilt as we know it, looks beautiful with a decorative flat sheet and matching pillowcases.
